GPS time clock app for mobile and field teams
With QRtimetrack's GPS time clock, employees clock in from their own phone, and the punch is accepted only inside a geofence you draw around each site. Location is checked at clock-in and clock-out only – no tracking during the day. It works offline and costs from €19 per month.
Updated:
How a geofence time clock works
- Add your locations – an address or a pin on the map for each site, client or warehouse.
- Set the radius for each location. A small shop may need 50 metres; a large construction site or farm may need several hundred.
- Invite employees with an activation link. They add the app to the phone's home screen – no app store needed, Android or iPhone.
- Employees tap Clock in. The phone reads its position once. Inside the zone, the punch is accepted; outside, it is flagged and the employee can type the reason.
- You see who is at work on the dashboard, by location, in real time.
GPS can be combined with other checks. Add an optional selfie, or require Face ID or fingerprint through the phone's passkeys – the biometric check stays on the phone and QRtimetrack never receives it. On fixed sites you can also use a QR code time clock instead of, or together with, GPS.
Built for a mobile workforce
Mobile workforce time tracking is hard with paper or a fixed terminal: people start the day at a client, a site or a vehicle, not at the office. A GPS time clock app fits teams such as:
- Construction crews moving between sites during the week.
- Cleaning teams working at several client addresses per day.
- Maintenance and installation technicians, including solar, HVAC and electrical crews.
- Security guards posted at client premises.
- Agricultural and seasonal workers spread over fields and farms.
- Home care and delivery staff who start their route away from the base.
Site managers see only their own locations, so a foreman on one project doesn't see the whole company. Every correction is logged with a reason.
Privacy: location only at clock-in
Employees' biggest worry about a GPS time clock is being followed all day. QRtimetrack does not do that. The phone's position is read only at the moment the employee clocks in or out, to confirm they are at the workplace. There is no background tracking during the shift, during breaks or after work.
- Location is used for one purpose: to confirm the punch belongs to a work location.
- Employees can see the zone they need to be in.
- Data is hosted in the EU (Frankfurt).
- Optional selfies are deleted automatically after 30 days.
- No fingerprints or face templates are collected – biometric checks stay on the phone.
Under the GDPR, location data is personal data. Tell employees in writing what is collected, why, and for how long, and check with your data protection adviser whether your country has extra rules on geolocation at work (some require consulting employee representatives).
No signal on site? It still works
Basements, tunnels, rural fields and steel structures often have no mobile data. GPS itself works without internet, so the phone can still determine where it is. The punch is stored on the phone with the real time and location and sent automatically when the signal returns. You see it with its original time.
Stopping fake locations and buddy punching
- One phone per employee. A new device needs manager approval, so colleagues can't clock in for each other from one phone.
- Server time. Changing the phone's clock is detected and flagged.
- Impossible travel. If two punches are too far apart for the time between them, the punch is flagged.
- Risk traffic light. Each punch is green, yellow or red. You review only the doubtful ones and approve or reject them – rejected punches don't count.
- Reason for out-of-zone punches. If someone has to start at a supplier or a different address, they type why.
From GPS punches to payroll
Set schedules per company or per employee, and the dashboard shows late arrivals, early departures and who is "not in yet". Breaks, overtime and weekend hours are calculated automatically. At month end you close the period, employees confirm their hours from the phone, and you export Excel, CSV or PDF with start and end times, breaks and totals for each day.
This kind of record also helps in the EU, where the Court of Justice ruled on 14 May 2019 (case C-55/18) that member states must require employers to measure each worker's daily working time. National rules vary, so check yours. See the full employee time tracking app overview for all features.

Frequently asked questions
Does the GPS time clock track employees all day?
No. QRtimetrack reads the phone's location only when the employee clocks in or out. There is no tracking during the shift, on breaks or outside working hours. The purpose is to confirm the employee is at the work location when the punch is made, nothing more.
How accurate is the GPS geofence?
Phone GPS is usually accurate to a few metres outdoors, less so inside buildings or between tall buildings. That's why you set the radius per location. Start with a generous radius, check the punches for a week, then tighten it. Punches just outside the zone are flagged, not lost.
What happens if an employee clocks in outside the zone?
The punch is recorded but flagged, and the employee can type a reason – for example, picking up materials. The manager approves or rejects it. Rejected punches don't count towards worked hours. This avoids losing real work time while keeping out-of-zone punches visible.
Can employees fake their GPS location?
Fake-location apps exist, which is why QRtimetrack doesn't rely on GPS alone. It checks server time, flags impossible travel between punches, ties each employee to one phone and gives every punch a risk colour. For extra assurance, combine GPS with a QR code on site or a selfie.
Does it work without mobile data?
Yes. GPS works without internet. The punch is saved on the phone with the real time and location and uploaded automatically when the signal returns, so crews on remote sites don't lose their hours.
Do employees need to install an app?
No app store install is needed. Employees open an activation link and add QRtimetrack to the home screen on Android or iPhone. It works like a normal app, in the employee's own language.
